According to the National Institute of Nursing Research,
"few data are available to demonstrate which approaches work best for
their particular reasons." To learn more about the many forms of spine
surgery, see this page.
The following surgical options for low back pain are listed by
the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). Nevertheless, the National Institute of
Nursing Research cautions that "few data are available to indicate which
strategies work best for their particular reasons." I had some words
with Dr. Sumit Sinha, the best
neurosurgeon in Gurgaon. Read on to learn more about the facts I have on spine surgery:
·
Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are two different procedures. These
methods are used to treat vertebral compression fractures brought on by
osteoporosis. Both procedures include injecting a glue-like bone cement into
the bone, which hardens and strengthens it.
·
Laminectomy and decompression of the spine. This treatment is
done when spinal stenosis results in a constriction of the spinal canal, which
results in pain, numbness, or weakness. By removing the bony vertebral walls
and any bone spurs, the surgeon hopes to widen the spinal column and release
pressure on the nerves.
·
Discectomy. This procedure is used to remove a herniated disc
that is pushing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Procedures for laminectomy
and discectomy are routinely combined.
·
Foraminotomy. In order to prevent bulging discs or age-related
joint thickening from pressing on the nerve, the surgeon enlarges the bone hole
where a nerve root exits the spinal canal during this procedure.
·
Nucleoplasty, sometimes referred to as plasma disc
decompression. This laser treatment employs radiofrequency radiation to treat
moderately herniated disc-related low back pain The surgeon inserts a needle into the disc. The needle is then
used to implant a heated plasma laser device, which creates a field that causes
the disc's tissue to melt, shrink, and release pressure on the nerves.
·
The spine's fusion. The spinal disc between two or more
vertebrae is removed by the surgeon, and the adjacent vertebrae are
subsequently fused together using bone grafts or metal implants secured with
screws. A long recovery period is necessary after spinal fusion to give the
bone grafts time to grow and fuse the vertebrae together. Spinal fusion might
result in a loss of spine flexibility.
• Natural
discs are replaced by artificial discs. This is seen as an alternative to
spinal fusion for patients who have severely damaged discs. The disc is taken
out and replaced with a synthetic disc that helps the vertebrae regain their
height and movement.
Many
surgical techniques are discouraged by NINDS, who notes that intradiscal
electrothermal therapy, for instance, is "of questionable value."
According to NINDS, there is little evidence to support radiofrequency
denervation treatment and it only temporarily relieves pain. I would advise
seeing with Dr. Sumit Sinha if you are experiencing any spine problems. He is
Gurgaon's top spine expert.
